Health Professions Council meeting agenda summary

This is a summary of the agenda for the Council meeting to be held on Thursday 10 December. The full agenda and papers are available on our website at:

A summary of decisions will be made available on the HPC's website within fifteen working days of the meeting.

Psychotherapists and Counsellors Consultation Responses
A consultation was held between 14 July 2009 and 16 October 2009 on the recommendations of the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Professional Liaison Group (PLG) regarding the statutory regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors.

The Council will be asked to consider the consultation responses received and agree the text of the document for publication on the HPC website.

Conclusions on the proposed statutory regulation of Psychotherapists and Counsellors
Following consideration of the consultation document detailed above, the Council will be invited to discuss and agree the preliminary conclusions about the potential regulation of psychotherapists and counsellors which can be made at this stage.

CHRE Review of the conduct function of the General Social Care Council: Learning points for HPC
The Council is asked to consider whether any further action should be taken by the HPC in relation to its own fitness to practise processes in light of the review of the General Social Care Council’s (GSCC) conduct functions, the report on which was published by CHRE in November 2009.

Consultation on the statutory regulation of Dance Movement Therapists – responses and conclusions
The Council is asked to consider the consultation responses and conclusions on the statutory regulation of dance movement therapists following a consultation exercise carried out between mid July and mid October this year.

Consultation on Health References
The Council will be asked to discuss and agree the text of a consultation paper
which proposes that the requirement for a health reference completed by a doctor for entry to the HPC Register should be replaced with a self-declaration.

Revalidation Update
The Council will be asked to discuss and approve the revalidation project brief.

First Annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) report
The Council will be asked to discuss and agree the text of the first annual CPD report for publication in Spring 2010.

Consultation on amendment of the Health Professions Council (Registration and Fees) Rules 2003
A consultation was carried out on a proposed amendment to the Health Professions Council (Registration and Fees) Rules Order of Council 2003 in order to set the registration cycle for hearing aid dispensers. Council will be invited to consider and agree the text of the key decisions document.

The Health Professions Council (Registration and Fees) (Amendment) Rules 2010
Assuming that Parliament approves the draft Health Professions (Hearing Aid Dispensers) Order 2009 (which provides for the HPC to regulate hearing aid dispensers form the 1st April 2010), the Council will need to amend the HPC (Registration and Fees) Rules 2003 to provide a registration renewal cycle for hearing aid dispensers.

Council will be invited to approve the draft rules in principle and agree that approval of the Rules in their final form may be given by means of electronic resolution once the Health Professions (Hearing Aid Dispensers) Order 2009 has been approved by Parliament.
