Health Professions Council meeting agenda summary

The Council meeting will be held at the Stormont Hotel, Upper Newtownards Road, Belfast, BT4 3LP.

This is a summary of the agenda for the Council meeting to be held on Wednesday 7 October. The full agenda and papers are available on our website at:

A summary of decisions will be made available on the HPC's website within fifteen working days of the meeting.

Practice notes

The Council will be asked to discuss and approve a number of practice notes, which are intended to aid panels that make decisions relating to fitness to practise cases.

Indicative sanctions policy

The Council will be asked to discuss and approve a revised version of this policy, which sets out how sanctions should be applied in fitness to practise cases.

Guidance on health and character process

Following a consultation held in January-April 2009, the Council will be asked to approve an analysis of the consultation responses and the revised guidance on health and character issues.

Regulation of sonographers – Recommendation to the Secretary of State for Health

On 10 September 2009, the Council agreed to recommend a form of regulation for sonographers. The Council will be asked to agree the text of its recommendation to the Secretary of State, including issues which require further exploration.

Regulation of practitioners of acupuncture, herbal medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and other traditional medicine systems

The Department of Health is currently consulting stakeholders on recommendations made by a steering group on the regulation of these practitioners. The Council will be asked to agree its response to the consultation.
