Commenting on the issue of head teachers' pay, Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union, said;
"While the importance of the head teacher's job cannot be underestimated, it must be remembered that teaching is a collaborative profession and it is not just one person who delivers a good education for pupils. Teachers and support staff work ludicrous numbers of unpaid hours and do not see this reflected in their pay.
"This is public money and to award one person excessive sums of money would be irresponsible. The actual schools themselves would no doubt benefit from the additional injection of money rather than it being made available to pay individuals.
"At least because this is a local authority maintained school the head’s salary is in the public domain. We of course have no idea what salary head teachers in Academies are paid as they are exempt from disclosing such information".
