Commenting on the children, schools and families committee's report on school accountability, Keith Bartley, chief executive of the General Teaching Council (GTC) said:
'Education is a major public service affecting the life chances of every child and young person, and it must therefore be publicly accountable. However, the many different ways in which teachers and schools are held to account have now become counterproductive and can sometimes work against innovation and improvement.
'The GTC support the select committee's conclusion that we need to get a better and a healthier balance between national accountability and greater freedom for schools and teachers to set local priorities and to report to parents and the local community.'
