Government announcement on employee engagement endorsed by CMI

17 July 2009

The Chartered Management Institute has voiced support for proposals laid out in 'Engaging for Success' - a report published today by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills. The report, which follows the MacLeod review of employee engagement, calls on employers to 'unleash the potential' of their staff to boost UK competitiveness.

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, says: "For a high quality of working life and a high quality of performance, it doesn't matter so much what the business is, but how the people in that business behave. Right now, organisations across the UK are hampered by poor management skills, with leaders who have an inability to 'let go' and allow staff to take ownership of their work. The end result is talented people becoming frustrated and disengaged at best, or ready to leave, at worst."

Spellman's comments come in the wake of research* uncovering low levels of staff engagement within UK organisations:

- fewer than half (48%) are proud of their organisation's environmental record, despite 86% of employers agreeing that carbon reduction is a key motivating factor

- most staff want leaders who provide a sense of vision and direction, but just 45% think 'senior management are managing well'

- 85% want to be viewed as 'high potential' by their employer, but just 2% claim their organisation regards everyone as talent

Following today's launch, Ruth Spellman OBE has been appointed to the Government's high-level sponsor group to help drive a national awareness campaign focusing on employee engagement. Under the stewardship of the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, it will involve professional bodies such as the Chartered Management Institute, alongside the CBI and Work Foundation and employers including HSBC, Sainsbury's and Toyota UK. Petra Wilton, director of policy and research at the Chartered Management Institute, has also been appointed to the Employee Engagement Specialist Forum which will advise on increasing the quality and support available for those who want to develop engagement.
