Press Release

GMB Response To Rentokil Closure Of Pension Fund

20 December 2005

Steve Jennings, GMB senior officer in Yorkshire where GMB has a concentration of members who work for Rentokil-Initial, commenting on the decision to close the pension fund said:

“GMB is appalled that some our members found themselves hearing on the media that their pension scheme is closing.  GMB is angry with the decision itself and with the way it was made. GMB was not consulted about this decision by Rentokil.  Four years ago the scheme was closed to new entrants as many companies have done in recent years and now we see the next stage of the attack on workers’ pensions.

GMB is seeking an immediate meeting with the company and will try to ascertain the true reason for this retrograde decision.  We will also be seeking details of the scheme’s trust deed, employees’ contractual entitlements and accurate financial information on the scheme, the company and the proposal for future pension provision for employees of Rentokil-Initial.

No employer should be able to take this action without proper consultation with the scheme members and their representatives.  Our pension and legal experts are examining carefully if we have grounds for litigation to defend our members’ contractual rights. GMB will use all means possible to see that companies live up to their responsibility for their workers’ retirement. The Union will insist that any changes that are made to contracts are made by agreement."
