GMB call on government to adopt Liberal Democrat party mansion tax proposal
22 September 2009
GMB today commented on the proposal from the Liberal Democrat spokesperson Vince Cable that there should be a mansion tax on houses valued at more than £1 million.
Paul Kenny, GMB General Secretary said, "While a lot of Liberal Democrat Party policies are neither socially acceptable or workable a gem has emerged in their proposed mansion tax. This is the proposal that people with houses valued at more than £1 million should pay an additional annual tax of 0.5% of the value above £1 million.
GMB would urge the Chancellor to take a strong look at this proposal. It is not fair that residents in Bishops Avenue mansions in Hampstead should pay the same as people in semi-detached houses in Finchley. I would be interested to hear the reasons why the residents of the mansions should not pay more."
