Press Release
Floral re-discovery for Heartwood's ancient Bluebell Woods
17 April 2009
Join in bluebell walks that are taking place over the May bank holiday weekend...
Two of Hertfordshire's oldest and most spectacular bluebell woods are back in the public eye thanks to the new Heartwood Forest project near St Albans, backed by an open invitation to two days of guided floral walks in May.
Flower lovers have traditionally enjoyed access to the glorious bluebell carpets of Heartwood's Langley Wood, one of three main pockets of ancient woodland on the 858-acre farmland site near St Albans to be planted with native broadleaf trees by owner the Woodland Trust.
But the Trust has now opened up two woods previously off limits to the public – Well Wood and Puddlers Wood, together offering more than 20 acres of bluebell habitat.
"Bluebells are a key indicator of ancient woodland, so the two go hand in hand to make an amazing spectacle at this time of year as familiar trees come back into leaf at the same time as the bluebells blossom," said Louise Neicho, Trust woodland officer for Heartwood.
"We know from our supporters how lovely Langley Wood is at this time of year but we believe that the bluebells in Well Wood and Puddlers Wood are even more stunning."
"As someone who lives close to the site and can remember the barbed wire blocking paths and tracks, it is wonderful to think that people can now freely enjoy such a natural spectacle on their doorstep."
Woodland Trust staff will be accompanying walkers on May Day Monday (May 4th) and Tuesday (May 5th), with three walks each day at 11am, 12 noon and 2pm.
The May Day 12 noon walk will be especially for families with children.
Walkers are invited to meet at the Scout Hut on Sandridgebury Lane, leading from Sandridge Village to the hut, with tea and coffee provided along with information on the Trust's proposals for creating England's largest continuous new native forest.
Visitors are encouraged to come by public transport, cycle or walk up from the nearby Sandridge Village.
