Eye Health Alliance and IGA join forces to promote regular eye tests
Tuesday 12th June 2007
The Eye Health Alliance is joining forces with the International Glaucoma Association to promote the importance of eye care services at next week’s NHS Confederation Annual Conference at ExCel Exhibition Centre in Docklands, London.
The Eye Health Alliance and the IGA will be exhibiting at the conference to talk to delegates about the importance of eye health for all, the health benefits of regular eye tests and the need to reduce the unacceptable high level of avoidable sight loss in the UK.
Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the UK. Regular eye tests for those at risk are not only crucial to ensure early detection of the disease but provide an effective preventative health measure.
A spokesperson for the Eye Health Alliance said, “Avoidable sight loss is a tragedy both for patients and the NHS, yet it can so easily be prevented through regular eye tests. This conference attracts senior level NHS managers and PCT commissioners. We want to ensure they understand the importance of eye care services for all patients.”
“The IGA recognises the importance of having the three eye care tests which have been proven to improve the early detection of glaucoma and support the maintenance of hospital ophthalmic services at a level to ensure follow-up eye clinic appointments are undertaken in a timely manner,” David Wright CEO International Glaucoma Association.
Delegates who visit the stand will be able see demonstrations of the Haag-Streit Heidelberg Retina Tomograph 3 (HRT3) machine which can be used to detect glaucoma and delegates will also be able to pick up resources about glaucoma and eye health.
