English Partnerships and Housing Corporation announce new study into managing mixed communities
4 December 2006
A study aimed at providing practical guidance for housing providers on managing mixed communities has been launched today (Monday, 4th December).
English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation have commissioned URBED, with the University of Westminster, to provide practical guidance on managing mixed communities. The study will use a survey of housing practitioners and case studies of leading examples to show how the barriers to creating sustainable communities can be overcome at the briefing and developer selection stages. The guidance will also cover how residents can be effectively engaged in the on-going management of their neighbourhoods in different situations.
The study will build on work by URBED into how the new town of Northstowe in Cambridgeshire might best be managed: Who Runs This Place? and from a good practice guide developed by the University of Westminster: Creating and Sustaining Mixed Income Communities.
Launching the project, Steve Carr, Head of Policy and Economics at English Partnerships, said:
"This study will help us with one of the major challenges presented by the creation of new places - how communities will thrive and evolve after the houses have been built and the developers have moved on."
Matt Leach, Director of Policy and Communications at the Housing Corporation added:
"We want individuals and families to be able to contribute to the success of their communities. This project will develop effective and sustainable ways of improving the quality of people's lives by building long term successful neighbourhoods."
Project Director, Dr Nicholas Falk commented:
"We aim to bring together the tools used in pace setting new communities, such as Caterham Barracks in the South East and the New Gorbals in Glasgow, in a form that busy managers can use."
The first findings will be produced by the end of January 2007, and the guide is expected to be published next May.
