Energy big six pledge £225 million for fuel poverty – Don’t forget the home insulation

11 April 2008

Following the announcement that the big six energy companies will provide an additional £225 million over the next three years for social assistance programmes, the National Insulation Association (NIA) has countered that whilst this is welcomed, additional measures to reduce energy wastage are the only long-term solution.

Neil Marshall, CEO of the NIA, said, “The pledge of additional funding to reduce energy costs for those most vulnerable to fuel poverty is a beneficial move and will undoubtedly help those most in need in the short term. However, the real answer is to look at long-lasting ways to reduce energy consumption whilst improving standards of consumer comfort in the home, and the only means that this can be done is by installing effective home insulation.”

Cavity wall and loft insulation can reduce energy bills in the long term by an average of around £200 per year and is clean, safe and quick to install. Additionally, home thermal efficiency is an effective combatant against the growing issue of carbon emissions, which the Government has recently declared steps to address over the next three years, including the provision of home insulation for those aged 70 or over or on qualifying benefits – which could even be provided free!

Neil summarised, “We strongly believe that the answer to ending fuel poverty is the combination of sufficient spending on social tariffs, combined with a supported home insulation programme to bring all vulnerable householders’ properties into line with current thermal efficiency regulations.

We and our members are fully committed to working towards a day when fuel poverty will be a historical fact, not a growing social issue.”
