Energy Agency win coveted National Home Improvement Council award for insulation innovation.
7th December 2007
In November the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) held its annual awards ceremony acknowledging individuals and companies for their contribution to the everchanging world of home improvement. There is one category, however, that is not only important to the industry but also strives to tackle environmental concerns and the issue of global warming.
The Innovative Insulation Award is sponsored by the Cavity Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA) and administered by the National Insulation Association (NIA). It is given to a company that best demonstrates an innovative approach in encouraging the take up of insulation measures. When judging the award originality and an innovative answer to an identifiable problem were looked for.
The area is often overlooked but as government policy for the coming years is to greatly increase the percentage of homes with adequate insulation, it is more important than ever that new methods of encouraging homemakers to insulate are put into practice.
This year’s winner, from a record number of entries, is Energy Agency from Ayr, who’s ‘Private Rented Property Improvement Scheme’ impressed the judges above all of the others. The award was presented to Alan and Ann McGonicle by David Harvey, Chair of CIGA and Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA who commented; “As a result of targeting the private rental market, Energy Agency enabled 300 properties to be improved and around 50 tenants were removed from severe fuel poverty as a result. The rental market is often forgotten and by targeting landlords and informing them of grants they provided a ‘hand holding’ service throughout the scheme that was of great benefit to everyone involved. ”
On receiving the award Alan said; “We are delighted to receive this superb award. It’s fantastic to get recognition for all our hard work in running this successful project, which has resulted in real improvements to the private rented sector. We’d like to thank CIGA and NIA for being such great hosts at these prestigious awards.”
Councillor Peter Convery, Chair of the Energy Agency added: “Energy efficiency improvements are essential across all housing sectors but particularly in the private rented sector. I am therefore delighted that this project has been recognised at a national level.”
Many excellent projects were put forward for this hotly fought category however, and those most notable were the runners up, namely; Conwy Borough Council with their excellent energy efficiency scheme implemented on six bungalows using the most up-todate practices possible and Mould Growth Consultants Ltd for their unique approach and techniques used in the insulation of houses without cavities.
