Press Release

Edexcel and the ifs School of Finance (ifs) are working together to enhance personal finance education which will complement Edexcel's 14-19 Diploma 'total solution' offering.

28 September 2007

ifs will be offering its Personal Financial Management qualifications at levels 1, 2 and 3 as Additional Specialist Learning which can be taken by any student studying for an Edexcel Diploma.  In addition, ifs will be collaborating in the development of the financial content of the Principal Learning for Edexcel's Business, Administration and Finance Diploma, available in the second wave of Diplomas from September 2008.

Students will learn to manage their money and cope confidently and effectively with basic financial issues, including understanding money and its different forms, the sources of money, how to budget and make key financial decisions, how to manage debt in all its forms, banking procedures, and other basic financial literacy.

The ifs qualifications can be taken as part of a student's 14-19 Diploma, or as a stand-alone qualification by non-Diploma students as equivalents to GCSEs at levels 1 and 2, and to AS and A levels at level 3, the latter carrying the full UCAS tarrif.

Gavin Shreeve, ifs Chief Executive commented. "We believe that personal financial learning is a vital part of any young person's education. It is an essential core skill and Government and other agencies agree that learning about personal finance is important. The aim of offering our qualifications alongside Edexcel's 14-19 Diplomas is to enhance further the financial education of the nation's youth."

Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel's MD, added: "By partnering with experts in their fields, such as the ifs, we will help Diploma students to gain the knowledge, skills and understanding to take them into further and higher education and their adult life and to help them become even more employable.”

ifs  will also work with Edexcel to develop and deliver professional development and training services for those preparing to teach the financial elements within the Principal Learning of the Business, Administration and Finance Diploma.

Edexcel's Diplomas are exciting new qualifications, offered for first teaching from 2008, designed to challenge and stretch learners, whether they are preparing for university or employment.  From 2013, learners will be able to take one of 14 Diplomas at Foundation, Higher and Advanced Levels covering all the sectors of the economy.  They will sit alongside, and could incorporate GCEs and GCSEs, and Edexcel's BTEC suite of qualifications and offer a mix of theoretical and applied learning, including functional English, maths and ICT, and the opportunity to develop a specialism or take on complementary study such as financial capability.
