Devonport short-listed for award

28 November 2006

Local people have helped put the South Yard Enclave in the running for a prestigious national award. The Devonport scheme has been short-listed for an award by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The former MoD site has been closed off to the public for over 60 years and is now well on its way to being transformed into a lively new community of over 450 new homes, offices, shops and community facilities.

The winner of the RTPI planning award will be announced on 8 February 2006.

English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency is working with the Housing Corporation, Matrix Partnership, Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership and Plymouth City Council to turn these plans into reality.

Developer Redrow has already lodged plans for 65 new homes, some of which will be affordable.

Steve Jackson, Senior Regeneration Manager for English Partnerships said, “The involvement of local residents has helped us greatly with the planning process for the scheme. In just over a year we have bought the site, approved the masterplan, appointed a developer and started work.

“Making it to the finals acknowledges the very positive contribution local people have made to the development of ideas for the future use of the site.

“We are continuing to make excellent progress in the creation of a sustainable, mixed-use neighbourhood that will not only meet the housing needs of local people but also provide them with employment, shops and community facilities. The Grade II listed Market Hall and clocktower will be refurbished and brought back into use.”

Commenting on the community consultation element of the project, Matt Lally, Director for Matrix Partnership, responsible for preparing the masterplan for the Storage Enclave said, “From the very beginning the people of Devonport have had their full say in the site’s future. I’m sure that community input on the masterplanning side influenced the judges when they drew up their short-list.”
