CSCI's response to the National Strategy for Housing in an Ageing Society.

Chief Inspector Paul Snell said:

“The Commission for Social Care Inspection welcomes the Government’s announcement today about ensuring that future housing options support people to live safely, independently and how they choose, as they grow older.

"In planning for an ageing population, it is essential to listen to what people really want now and in the future, and the strategy launched today recognises the importance of involving people in the design of their living environment. Good strategic needs assessment, engagement with local citizens and coordination by local councils with a range of partners will be key to ensure the right mix of housing options to meet the increasing expectations of local people.

"Older people are the largest single group of people who rely on social care. It is encouraging that the strategy also recognises the importance of good advice and information to enable older people to make the right choices for them.  This is something the Commission has highlighted in its special study A Fair Contract with Older People? - and most recent State of Social Care report.”
