CSCI's commitment to equalities profiled in Schneider Ross report

    12 November 2007

The Commission for Social Care Inspection has welcomed the release of the report The Public Sector Equality Duties: Making an Impact in which the social care inspectorate has been profiled.

The research project, carried out by Schneider Ross Limited, included in-depth case studies with eight public sector organisations, including CSCI, and looked at the impact of the Public Sector Equality Duties and how they have influenced the equalities agenda within public sector organisations.

As outlined in the findings, CSCI has mainstreamed equality and diversity as part of its day-to-day business; and protecting and promoting human rights is a key feature of its corporate plan.

CSCI's Chief Inspector Paul Snell said: “It was pleasing to have our commitment to ensuring diversity in social care services profiled in this report.”

    He continued:

“At CSCI, we believe that social care services should be inclusive, accessible and appropriate for all.  People should have equal access to care services whatever their gender, age, sexual orientation, race, belief or disability.

“We have separate equality schemes to meet the requirements of the Public Duty Legislation, and our Disability Scheme has been shortlisted for a national award, with the result to be announced next month.

”We put the views and experiences of people who use services at the heart of everything we do. As a regulator we believe that we have a special responsibility to aspire to the highest standards in equality and inclusion and our schemes reflect that belief and our approach to the involvement of our staff.

“Our Equalities & Diversity strategy is central to the delivery of CSCI's responsibilities and commitments, and includes the involvement of our four Equalities and Diversities Staff Groups. We also have an external stakeholder group made up of people who use services, known as the Experts by Experience. These groups provide a source of expert advice and guidance for CSCI, specifically around equalities and diversity.

Paul Snell continued: “CSCI believes that modern social care services need to deliver services which are culturally sensitive, inclusive, accessible, and which make a difference to individual lives. Part of our job is to make sure services do this fairly and without discrimination. Our strategy, equality schemes, staff and experts by Experience come together to help us to just that.

“In addition to these schemes, we have had an overarching Equality and Diversity Strategy covering all the diversity areas (age, gender, including gender identity, sexual orientation, race, disability and religion or belief) in place for well over a year, ahead of any legislative requirement.”
