Responding to the government announcement on its household energy management programme, Cllr Gary Porter, chairman of the Local Government Association Environment Board, said:
"Putting local councils at the heart of making homes more energy efficient will help people to cut their fuel bills further and quicker. Councils know local areas best so they can work with people to boost their homes' energy efficiency and target help at those who need it most.
"The LGA has long been saying that the government's scheme to make homes more energy efficient needs changing. Millions of people have been sent light bulbs they never use but now councils can help install real energy saving measures, like home insulation or solar panels, that will really help people cut their fuel bills.
"Three quarters of people think councils have a key role to play in tackling climate change and town halls will be glad to have more power to make homes greener."
