Conference On International Strategies For Hospice And Palliative Care
Commonwealth Club, London
September 20th 2006
WHO and DfID speakers examine AIDS and cancer issues
With the AIDS pandemic and the ever growing need for hospice and palliative care in the developing world, it is vital that people working in the UK are aware of and support such services in other countries.
The UK Forum for Hospice and Palliative Care Worldwide is holding its annual conference for people who are involved in or would like to learn more about international hospice and palliative care. Key notes include speakers from the World Health Organisation Programme on Cancer Control, the Open Society Institute (USA) and the Department for International Development (UK). In the afternoon, the focus will be on UK agencies working in hospice and palliative care internationally including the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, The International Observatory on End of Life Care and Hospice of Hope, Romania.

About the UK forum for Hospice and Palliative Care Worldwide
Help the Hospices established the UK forum for hospice and palliative care worldwide in 2001. The UK forum is a network of individuals and organisations based in the UK who work together to support efforts to develop hospice and palliative care services around the world in resource-poor settings. Membership is also open to individuals and organisations around the world. The UK forum was established in 2001 and today links over 200 organisations and individuals. It communicates regularly with services worldwide via email bulletins. The UK forum works to:
- Influence governments and policy makers to include hospice and palliative care within their health policies
- Promote and develop the sharing of information and experience
- Influence and develop realistic funding for hospice and palliative care
- Support and develop palliative care in resource-poor countries through Help the Hospices’ Worldwide Education, Training and Projects Grants
- Raise awareness in the UK about the need for palliative care globally, particularly in resource-poor countries
About Help the Hospices
Help the Hospices is the national charity for the hospice movement, supporting over 220 local hospices across the UK in their vital work on the front line of caring for people who face the end of life. Hospices provide a wide range of care for people living with terminal illness and their families, from in-patient beds to day care and care for people in their own homes. The majority of hospice care is provided by local independent charities. The UK government contributes an average of 33% of running costs for adult hospices and 2.7% for children’s (England) – the rest is dependent on voluntary contributions (note: based on latest figures available).
