Climate Change Committee report on aviation

8 December 2009

Business organisation London First published its own report into Heathrow's performance in 2008, and recommended to government that any decision to approve a third runway should be conditional on improved passenger experience and enforcement of strict air pollution and noise limits, with strong penalties for breaches, including a reduction in allowed flights.

Baroness Jo Valentine, London First chief executive said:

"The Committee on Climate Change has acknowledged that some expansion of air travel is compatible with meeting carbon reduction targets. Better, faster rail links between UK cities and to Europe can make valuable inroads into demand for short haul air travel. But international long distance travel is economically vital and can only be made by air. Robust enforcement of local air and noise pollution limits, and fewer flights if those limits are breached, can help make Heathrow an acceptable servant to London, rather than a nuisance neighbour."
