BIS issues guidance to employers on changes to the vocational qualification system
16 November 2009
BIS, the Department for Business Innovation & Skills, have produced a leaflet for employers about the changes to the vocational qualifications system.
At a time when skills are more important than ever and the demands on employers are constantly changing, vocational qualifications can help businesses upskill their workforce, become more competitive and prepare for the future. Changes to the vocational qualification system mean that the voice of employers is now central to the vocational qualifications system. The Sector Skills Councils, such as e-skills UK, work with employers to develop the qualifications they need, and to advise government departments on those that should receive priority funding. New vocational qualifications are becoming available on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) which is a new way of recognising skills and qualifications. It does this by awarding credit for qualifications and units (small steps of learning).
Training providers are now beginning to work in line with the new system and can help employers identify and arrange the right training for their organisation. By December 2010, vocational qualifications will be fully reformed in line with the new system and supported by government funding like Train to Gain.
