ATL Comment On IFS Report On Funding For Disadvantaged Pupils
10 June 2008
Martin Johnson, deputy general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said:
“It’s not news that extra funding for disadvantaged pupils is divided among all pupils in local schools – we’ve known this for several years. But the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) is wrong to blame local authorities for this since the decisions about allocating this extra funding is made by local forums dominated by local head teachers.
“We support the Government's aim to get more funding to the most deprived pupils which is part of its ongoing review of school funding. We also support retaining a local element in funding decisions, but the Government needs to find a way to ensure the local forums, dominated by local headteachers, do not distort its funding intentions.”
