Press Release

AQA is committed to Citizenship

29 April 2009

The first Young Mayor Parliamentary Forum is being held today at Portcullis House and AQA welcomes the initiative to open up the world of politics to young people. We strongly support the concept of breadth of learning – motivating young people to become responsible and active citizens.

AQA is committed to offering young people the opportunities to become more well-rounded individuals, through wider learning and enrichment activities. Earlier this year AQA hosted a debate in the House of Commons on the role of citizenship education and its importance to young people and the whole of British society. AQA sponsored Voting and Citizenship week during the exhibition and is the only awarding body to offer a full GCE A-level in Citizenship, allowing students to continue their study in this increasingly popular and relevant subject.

Janet Holloway, Assistant Director at AQA responsible for Citizenship specifications said:

"AQA has, for a long time, supported and promoted the development of courses focusing on the acquisition of active citizenship skills, a sense of community and the difference that individuals can make to our society and the world."

Many of our new qualifications reflect this commitment, including the AQA Bacc which has A-levels at its core and recognises students' achievements in academic study, wider learning and personal development. Bacc students study three A-levels as well as taking a further AS in critical thinking, general studies or citizenship. Students must also complete 100 or more hours of enrichment activities, which often include voluntary work and community participation.

AQA's new project qualifications, taken as stand-alone courses or as part of the AQA Bacc, allow students the freedom to explore in depth a topic in which they have a personal interest. Some students have chosen to write projects on prominent global issues such as:

"What is climate change and how can it be prevented?"

"How successful has the IMFs poverty reduction strategy been in helping developing countries?"

"Should the production of biofuels be subsidised?"
