Press Release

APS’s Spring CPD Events – Fire & Demolition

1st February 2006

The Association for Project Safety is running a series of Continuing Professional Seminars dealing with Fire and Demolition.  They will run from February – May 2006 in 15 venues throughout the UK.

By 2007 the legislation that controls fire safety in buildings will have undergone a number of major changes in a process that started in 2005. Many of these changes will come into effect in 2006 and will affect England and Wales as well as Scotland with respect to new buildings, alterations and all buildings where work is carried out. These changes together with modifications to insurance requirements, revisions to the ‘Joint Code’ from the insurance companies, and the (eventual) revision to the CDM  Regulations will influence standards of fire safety on construction sites – so need to be thoroughly understood. However, they will also make the whole fire safety scenario very confusing for those members of the construction professions who operate north and south of the Border or may occasionally need to do so!

Then add to this Demolition. Here ‘competence is the key’ with a need for pre-tender enquiries to cover training standards for operatives, management experience and qualifications as well as company experience. What are current standards for these? What then should be dealt with in a Notifiable project? What are the practical issues and the timescale implications? How do you know? What should you know? What are the significant hazards that the perceptive PS should be watching out for? Last, but not least, what impact could revised CDM regulations have on the demolition industry? Do the changes published to date go far enough? What would the demolition industry like to see to make demolition safer?

This event is geared to meet the needs of the Planning Supervisor (and designer) who has to grapple with such problems and wants to be up to speed with the many changes that have affected both areas of practice in recent times.

The speakers are Eric Marchant of Edinburgh Fire Services and John Law former president of Institute of Demolition Engineers.
