A world record for kite flying was achieved in Bournemouth on Saturday 14th April at the annual conference of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. The kite flying record attempt  was made on Saturday afternoon on the beach front when a thousand school children, local  Scouts, Rotaractors,  Rotarians and their families flew 927 kites at the same time beating the current record in the Guinness Book of Records  for kite flying which was set at 704. The bright blue and yellow kites with the Rotary logo made a stunning sight, they had been made specially for Rotary by the world’s largest kite manufacturer in Weifang in north east China.

The conference was attended by more than 3000 delegates and this year the accent was on youth. The winners of the Rotary Young Citizen Awards attended the conference and were presented with their awards by BBC presenter Ellie Crisell, the awards ceremony was broadcast live from the conference by BBC News 24..
