The leader of the Greens has claimed her party is the "true opposition" to the government's plans for public spending.
Launching the Green party campaign for council elections in England, Caroline Lucas said:
"We have a government that is handing financial settlements to local councils which mean they are going to make horrendous decisions and big cuts.
"It's crucial that there are Green councillors to protect people from the most harsh of those cuts."
At present the Green party has 117 councillors on 43 councils in England and Wales, two MEPs and one MP, Ms Lucas.
It is fielding more than 1,600 candidates in the May 5 elections.
Lucas said the "cuts project" is wrong.
"Yes, we need to address the deficit but a better way is to get people back into work to ensure there are more taxes coming in," she said.
"Otherwise there is a greater risk of a double-dip recession.
"We can already see what extreme austerity is doing in countries like Portugal and Ireland."
Lucas also attacked the coalition for not keeping its promises on setting up the green investment bank and for not giving proper support to solar power.
People feel "hugely let down" by the government and the Greens are the alternative, Lucas said.

A classic example of 'putting the cart before the horse.' Just as a householder facing massive debt has no option but to address them before anything else, so must a country. How does this good lady believe that jobs can be 'created' to put our affairs in order ?
By the use of 'public money', no doubt - in other words, spending more of taxpayers' hard earned cash to try to create more jobs, most of them in the 'public sector' - in short, the economics of the madhouse.
