I hope that this site will help you to understand the work I do as a Labour Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead. I was first elected to Parliament for the Woolwich constituency in 1992 but following boundary changes have represented Erith and Thamesmead since May 1997.
I served as a member of the House of Commons Health Select Committee from 1994 to 2005 and since 2005 have been a member of the UK delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). I serve on the Equal Opportunities Committee of PACE. Since 2007, I have served on the Joint Committee on Human Rights. The Joint Committee on Human Rights consists of twelve members appointed from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and is charged with considering general human rights issues in the UK and all UK legislation and potential impact on human rights.
My main areas of personal interest are Environment, Equal Opportunities, Foreign Affairs, Health, Mental Health and Social Services
