Patrick Mercer
Constituency
Newark is a mainly rural constituency, lying between Nottingham and Lincoln. The area bosts both wildlife reserves and excellent transport infrastructure, which has led a number of companies to relocate here. While relatively few people work directly on the land, many are employed in farming-related industries such as haulage and food processing. The British Sugar plant at Newark employs more than 100 staff and processes over 1 million tonnes of sugar beet a year - many of which comes from local farmers. Other major employers include automotive components manufacturer NSK-RHP and rubber specialists Icon Polymer. In an area of almost full employment, many people commute to nearby Nottingham. A number of wildlife reserves, the Holocaust Centre, Newark Air Museum, Newark Castle and Sherwood Forest are all popular attractions which draw tourists and help the local economy as well as providing recreation for locals.
