Work as a Government Whip
As a Government Whip, Parliamentary protocol prevents me from signing Early Day Motions, tabling parliamentary questions or speaking in debates other than when I am speaking as a Whip.
Whips are heavily involved in the process of legislation and each Whip also has a Government department allocated to them. I am currently the Whip for the Treasury and I work with the Treasury Ministers and Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Sometimes constituents are disappointed that I cannot sign Early Day Motions (EDMs) however, wherever possible I raise the matter with the Minister directly and pass on any reply. In the same way I raise issues of concern to my constituents, with Ministers and Government departments.
Like Ministers, Whips are members of the Government and the work can often be time consuming. That said, I regard my constituents as my priority and my office team supports me in providing the best service possible to anyone from Erewash who needs help or advice.
From the time that Parliament rises, normally on Thursday evening until I have to travel back for the Monday sitting, I am in the constituency. I hold advice surgeries, attend fundraising events and meet with individuals, groups and organisations whenever I am invited to do so. I also meet with statutory and voluntary bodies.
