Humfrey Malins

Humfrey Malins was born in July 1945. Married in 1979 to Lynda, they have a son and a daughter.

He was educated at St Johns School, Leatherhead and Brasenose College, Oxford. Mr Malins has an MA in Law and qualified as a solicitor in 1971.

A keen sportsman, he played rugby for Oxford University, Richmond, and for the Southern Counties versus the New Zealand All Blacks in 1972. He has been captain of the House of Commons and Lords golf team.

He is widely traveled in Europe, East and West Africa, America, the Middle East and the Far East, and is a Member of the Council of Europe and the Western European Union.

Humfrey's Experience

Humfrey Malins was a member of Mole Valley District Council between 1973-1983 and Chairman of the Housing Committee.

Between 1983 and 1992 Mr Malins was Member of Parliament for Croydon North West. He was a Vice Chairman for the Backbench Legal Committee and PPS to Home Office Ministers.

He has been a Deputy District Judge since 1991, and a Recorder of the Crown Court from 1996

He founded the Immigration Advisory Service, a national charity providing free legal help to those with rights of appeal under immigration law in 1993, and was Chairman of Trustees until 1996.

He was awarded the CBE in Her Majesty's Honours List in 1997 for services to immigration policy and community relations.

He was elected MP for Woking in 1997, served as a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, and was made shadow Home Affairs Minister with responsibility for Asylum and Immigration in 2001. He resigned as shadow Minister over Iraq, but later was re-appointed to the front bench until December 2005 when he voluntarily returned to "take a break" to the back benches. In 2005 the Bow Group published Humfrey's booklet entitled "Crackpot" - a review of drugs policy in the criminal justice system, based on his judicial experience, which has been highly reviewed by Professionals and politicians of all parties.
