Biography

Biography

Liam was born in 1961, the son of William Fox, a teacher, and Catherine Fox. He was educated at St Bride's High School, East Kilbride and University of Glasgow where he was President of the University Conservative Club, 1982-83.

Liam is a General Practitioner, a former Civilian Army Medical Officer and Divisional Surgeon with St John Ambulance.

He is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Politics

Liam contested Roxburgh and Berwickshire in the 1987 General Election.

He was the National Vice-Chairman of the Scottish Young Conservatives, 1983-84; a Member of the Central Committee of Families for Defense from 1987 to 1989, and is a Member of Beaconsfield CPC.

He has been the Member of Parliament for Woodspring since April 1992.

Secretary of the Conservative Back bench Health Committee April 1992 - July 1993

Secretary of the Conservative West Country Members Committee April 1992 - July 1993.

In June 1993, Liam was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Michael Howard QC MP, Home Secretary.

In July 1994, he was appointed an Assistant Government Whip.

Following a limited Government reshuffle in November 1995, he was appointed a Lord Commissioner of Her Majesty's Treasury - a Senior Government Whip.

He was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1996-97.

In June 1997, Liam was appointed Opposition Front Bench Spokesman on Constitutional Affairs.

May 1999 to November 2003, he was the Shadow Secretary of State for Health.

He served as Shadow Secretary of State for Heath before being appointed Co-Chairman of the Party in 2003.

From May 2005 to December 2005, he served as Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Since December 2005 he has been the Shadow Secretary for Defence.

His interests include health, defense and the economy.
