Charles Kennedy
Constituency
Ross, Skye and Inverness West is located in the Scottish Highlands and, geographically, is the largest constituency in the UK as well as one of the most beautiful, with spectacular coastlines, islands and mountains as well as the main town of Inverness. Created in the boundary changes in the run up to the 1997 election, the constituency covers much of the Ross, Cromarty and Skye seat which Charles originally won in 1983. Despite boundary changes, a strong campaign from a well-known Labour challenger in 1997 and the swing towards Labour across the UK, Charles successfully held his proportion of the vote compared with 1992. In 2001 he was re-elected with 54.1% of the vote and a majority of 12,952. Liberal Democrat John Farquhar Munro went on to win the seat in the Scottish Parliament Elections on May 6th 1999 and increased his majority in the elections of 2003.
