About Caroline

Caroline Spelman is a working mother with three children. She is married to Mark, a partner with management consultants Andersen Consulting. Before entering politics she worked as a commercial negotiator for the National Farmers Union and dealt with some of today's most topical issues, such as biotechnology and genetic modification.

She stayed at home when the children were young, set up her own business and wrote a book on biotechnology.

Caroline was born in East Anglia and lived in the Essex village of Henham for eighteen years. She attended the local grammar school and read European Studies at London University. Caroline's interest in politics stems from her father's belief in the value of community.

She was appointed as a Whip in June 1998, helping to organise speakers for parliamentary debates and looking after MPs. She is now Conservative Spokesman for Health and Women, and tackles issues such as the family, drug abuse, adoption, fostering and childcare.

In her spare time she enjoys tennis, gardening and cooking.
