Angela Watkinson speaks out on the Lisbon Treaty
Angela spoke from The House of Commons this week,
“Voters in the Irish Republic have rejected the Lisbon Treaty with a resounding NO in a referendum that has been denied to the UK electorate, despite being promised one at the last election. The reactions have been revealing. The government says that we must continue with the ratification process. Why? The rules require unanimous acceptance by all member states. Now that Ireland has rejected the Treaty, it should fall automatically, so there should be no process to continue. It comes as no surprise to hear that EU leaders will now hold talks to work out how to snatch the Treaty from the jaws of defeat. They are demonstrating contempt not just for democracy, but also for their own rules, by ignoring both. At home, the Prime Minister continues to refuse to honour his manifesto promise for a referendum and it is not difficult to see the reason. The UK electorate does not want to transfer further powers to the EU and he will not risk an inevitable NO vote.”
