Tommy McAvoy MP Launches Post Office Consultation

Tommy McAvoy, MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, this week organised a meeting for a number of managers of sub post offices in Rutherglen to discuss the future make up of postal services in the town.

This is the first of a series of meetings which Mr McAvoy hopes to hold in advance of Royal Mail bringing forward its proposals in July. Royal Mail is set to announce its proposals on 22nd July 2008 which will then be subject to a six week consultation period.

Mr McAvoy first met with Mrs Agnes Keany of Fernhill Post Office.

Tommy McAvoy said: “While I support the Government’s overall approach it is important that the best business case is put in respect of existing postal services and also to look at what new services can be delivered through post office branches.

“I am grateful for the feedback which I have already received. I am keen to speak to as many of the managers of the branches throughout the constituency and hope to hold further meetings shortly.

“What has come clear already is the vast array of services which post offices can offer including banking facilities and insurance services as well as the everyday mail services we often associate with them.

“However not every post office is able to offer the same services, for example foreign currency exchange, vehicle licensing, and the passport “check and send” service. I will be keen to explore with other post offices locally what services they provide and what the potential is to develop new services, so that the very best case can be made in defence of postal services in Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

“In the meantime I would urge everyone locally to find out what services their local post office provides and make use of them when they can.”
