Dr Doug Naysmith
Shirehampton Job Centre Success
Friday October 17th 2008
Doug Naysmith MP and Sam Townend, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Bristol North West, both welcomed the decision of the Government to keep the Shirehampton Job Centre Plus open.
Doug Naysmith MP said, “We sought a meeting with the District Manager of Job Centre Plus, Rachel Jones, in August, held a useful meeting and then continued to press hard in early September. It is good to know our representations have been listened to and that we have had success.
“In the current economic and employment circumstances it is foolhardy to think of closing this community resource. The most important thing for people out of work is to have the earliest and easiest opportunities to get back in work. You need a local Job Centre to do this.”
Sam Townend said, “We have all campaigned to keep the Job Centre Plus open. Although it will no longer open on Fridays the most important thing is that it is staying open at all. It is simply too far and too expensive to expect people out of work in Avonmouth, Shirehampton, Sea Mills and Lawrence Weston to travel to the Horfield Job Centre each week or each day to find work.”
