Sanders Welcomes Language Student Protection
Local MP Adrian Sanders has expressed his delight at an amendment to the Government’s Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Bill which will increase protection for language students studying and staying in Torbay.
The amendment will ensure that host families provided by language schools are properly vetted, ensuring increased safety of the 22,000 foreign language students who arrive to study in the Bay every year.
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Bill is being put in place to tighten controls on those working with children, ensuring increased checks for those in charge of children, and improved welfare for those in their care.
Adrian’s work in securing the amendment relating to language schools was praised by fellow Liberal Democrat MP Annette Brooke in Parliament, where she congratulated the Torbay MP on the “excellent contribution” he had made to the debate.
Adrian commented:
“I am delighted that this amendment has been added to the Bill. I worked hard to have it put in place, meeting with Ministers, working with local police, and lobbying the Department for Education and Skills to support its inclusion.
“Whilst the Bill is by no means perfect, this amendment will help provide some peace of mind on this issue”.
