MP welcomes funding for Agriculture and Environment Partnership

Liberal Democrat Agriculture and Rural Affairs Spokesperson Colin Breedtoday welcomed the Chancellor's commitment to fund the core elements of theCurry report in order to fund modulation and ensure sustainable agriculture.

Colin Breed said:

"Agriculture has had a tough time in the recent years with BSE, the strongpound and the Foot and Mouth epidemic last year. Farmers have been at across roads and have been eager to diversify in order to supportenvironmental schemes but have been held back by the lack of support.

I welcome the Government's commitment today, but I wonder why it has takenso long for the Government to openly support rural and agriculturecommunities. A year on from foot and mouth and it is only now the Governmenthave started to act to provide the finance necessary to move agricultureinto the new era of sustainability"
