Hywel Francis
MP welcomes clean air decision
Aberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis has welcomed the European Commission's decision to refuse extra time for the UK to achieve its anti-pollution targets.
Dr Francis said,
'I have always believed that improving air quality in Port Talbot must be our highest priority locally. That is why I successfully urged Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council to launch its Clean Air Charter'.
It is essential that Port Talbot ceases to be a 'hot spot' breaking air quality limits for PM10s. I have recently met with representatives of the Environment Agency and Corus. I have been impressed by their commitment to improvement'.
I have also been pleased with the growing constructive campaigning by community groups and individual citizens throughout the locality'.
Dr Francis concluded,
'I am sure we can overcome these difficulties. Government and non-government bodies must work together to improve air quality for this and future generations'.
