Crispin Blunt
MP pays tribute to former mayor
6 November 2008
Crispin Blunt, MP for Reigate, today issued the following tribute to Cllr Michael Buttery who died earlier this week:
“I was very saddened to hear of the sudden death of Cllr Michael Buttery the Deputy Leader of the Council and a distinguished former mayor. Michael Buttery was a dedicated public servant who gave an enormous amount of his time and talent to our community. For the last decade he had represented Walton-on-the-Hill and Tadworth as a councillor and was mayor at the time of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. Inevitably the debt owed to him by all the people who live in the Borough will be largely unknown to them. He voluntarily gave much of his time to helping lead the Borough Council when he could otherwise have been enjoying a well-earned retirement from his profession. Those professional abilities and all that experience were put to use in the service of the Borough and its citizens. As the Member of Parliament I would like to formally record my thanks for that dedication and service. He was typical of many people who seek to give something back to the community when the opportunity presents itself. His friends and those who worked with him will already be sadly missing his fine qualities and our hearts go out to his widow Jane and her family at this difficult time. His untimely death has left our whole community significantly the poorer.”
