MP Crausby praises furniture for schools scheme

A scheme to provide surplus furniture from Lancashire schools to ones in Pakistan has been praised by Bolton North East MP David Crausby. And now he is calling on the Government to extend the scheme countrywide.

‘Furniture for Education Worldwide’ is run by Lancashire County Council, the union Unite, Marsden Heights Community College and the Anwar Jannat Memorial Foundation and is helping schools in the Gujrat district of Pakistan.

Mr. Crausby said: “Many of the things we take for granted in our schools are simply not available in the schools in Gujrat. Even basic requirements such as chairs and tables are missing so it’s great that this scheme can make such a big difference to the lives of the children there.

“It seems logical that with new college building projects having brand new equipment and furniture that any surplus could go to areas of greater need rather than ending up as landfill, which is what would have happened. And children in Lancashire will all have new state-of-the-art facilities and equipment so no-one is missing out.”

After David met with Communities Minister Hazel Blears about the scheme she agreed to write to all local authorities in the North West to encourage them to get involved.
