More must be done for Elderly Care Givers
Adrian Sanders, MP for Torbay, has today voiced his concerns that elderly carers are still not getting a fair deal when it comes to carer’s allowance despite the invaluable support they receive from many charities.
Adrian Commented:
“Older carers make a huge contribution to society both economically and socially. I hold nothing but the utmost respect for those who reach retirement age and still volunteer to care for family members or friends.”
“Some of these carers are working over 50 hours a week; these are the same hours as a full time job and should be compensated duly. Instead carers allowance is paid using the ‘overlapping benefit rule.’ This leaves many carers receiving very little in the way of a carer’s allowance.”
Adrian Sanders MP along with over 30 MP’s has signed Early Day Motion 2657 which commends the work being undertaken by IndependentAge, in partnership with Carers UK and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
Adrian Added:
“I signed this Early Day Motion to show my support to charities like IndependentAge who in partnership with Carers UK and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers provide invaluable assistance, advice and guidance to carers of the elderly, it is now time for the Government to show support financially.”
