'Meet your neighbour'

July 6 2009

Some of us never meet our neighbours. People who live mere metres away can often seem as far-flung as the moon. 'A Briton's home is his castle', goes the adage – an admirable quality, but also one that can leave people a little lonely. We watch with envy the openness of our European cousins.

Yet when the British do get together as a community, we do it with unmatched flair. The Silver Jubilee of 1977 saw street parties up and down the land, with previously unmet neighbours chipping in tables, chairs, food and drink. A lot of friendships were formed, and people had a lot of fun. The spirit of 1977 has never been forgotten by those who were there.

Britain today is a different place - more diverse, more cosmopolitan. So has that spirit gone? Some local residents don't think so.

Local Councillors, Holy Trinity Church and MP Tom Brake are planning an event in Wallington which hopes to celebrate Britain's new society with a show of neighbourly good will.

As part of Sutton's 'Take Part, Take Pride' 2009, they are holding a free party on the 12th of July from 2-5pm, at the Holy Trinity Centre, Maldon Road. It will feature games for all ages, face painting, a bouncy castle, a children's choir and all manner of refreshments. They are also encouraging people to bring and share international and inter-generational treats from home – food, drink, games and stories.

Tom said, "I want everyone who can to come. People deserve a chance to get to know each other. When neighbours become friends the result is a safer, happier society.

Margaret Ali added "As well as making friends with their neighbours, I have one other simple aim, I want everyone to have a lot of fun!"
