McIntosh To Meet Floods Minister

Miss Anne McIntosh, MP for the Vale of York and Shadow Minister for Floods, will be meeting Phil Woolas MP, Minister for the Environment, whom she shadows, on Tuesday 30th October at the Department of Environment.

Miss McIntosh said: “I am delighted to have secured a meeting with the Minister, following sustained questions to him regarding the Government’s actions since the floods in the summer. I look forward to raising a variety of issues with him about flood protection locally in North Yorkshire, and also the wider picture in the UK.

“In particular, I want to discuss the adequacy of the response to the floods when they hit, and share my concerns that the lack of coordination between the various bodies at the time of the floods hampered the rescue and clear up operation. I also want to focus on the lack of warning in some areas that were hit suddenly and were unprepared. More widely, I intend to highlight the alleged failure of the Environment Agency to dredge river courses adequately, contributing to the impact of the heavy rain. I will also bring up concerns regarding ownership of the drains, and the problem of surface water run off, as well as local issues including the lack of flood defences in Pickering,

“I hope that the meeting will provide a useful opportunity to stress the urgent need to address these points before any new heavy rainfall causes further flooding. The Government must act now to prevent this happening again.”
