    Letter to the Editor

    Dear Sir,

From his comments a confederation of British Industry Dinner, it seems that the Prime Minister has already made up his mind on nuclear power and did so before the Government started their Energy Review. The Government's Energy Review is a charade, as he was determined from day one to have a new generation of nuclear power stations.

Any decision on new nuclear investment in Britain must be taken on a properly informed, open and transparent basis, taking account of the various risks as well as the possible benefits. We need to investigate the technical, economic and environmental framework before any decision to proceed with a new generation of nuclear power facilities is made.

I hope that a diverse range of energy sources is included in our future energy mix. For an example of renewable energy, engines have been modified to use fuels like alcohol and oils refined from British farm crops. I look forward to the Government publishing their energy review later on this year.

Whatever happens on nuclear power, nothing should prevent us examining and pursuing every conceivable way of generating electricity from renewable and environmentally-friendly sources.

    Yours sincerely

    Angela Watkinson, MP for Upminster.
