Launch of steel petition in Rotherham town centre
4 July 2009
Denis MacShane joined with church leaders, trade unionists, councillors and fellow Rotherham MP John Healy to launch a parliamentary petition in support of the South Yorkshire steel industry. BBC Look North covered the launch event live and MacShane was interviewed on local radio stations. Hundreds of passers-by signed the petition. The Rotherham Advertiser carried a signed article by MacShane calling on the Government to help steelworkers. On Saturday the action moves to the South Yorkshire festival at Wortley Hall where MacShane has a special stand to encourage people to sign. Petition forms are being sent out to workplaces, schools, churches and will be available from teh Town Hall and other public places.
