Housing crisis hits the roof
Colin Breed MP for South East Cornwall and the Liberal Democrat Spokespersonfor Agriculture and Rural Affairs has uncovered further proof that theGovernment is prioritising urban needs over those of rural communities. Awritten Parliamentary Question revealed that there has been a substantialrise in the number of rural households which have been accepted asunintentionally homeless and in priority need since Labour came to power in1997.
The figures show an 19% rise in the number of households accepted by localauthorities as homeless since 1997 in the South West.
Colin Breed said:
"There is a serious shortage of Housing in rural areas and we are enteringan epoch where only the rich will be able to afford to live in thecountryside and young families are completely unable to get their feet onthe property ladder.
The rural areas of the UK have been hardest hit where the disparity betweenlocal wages and rising house prices is the greatest"
