French beef ban must end

News that the European Commission is to proceed to the next step ofreference to the European Court and press for daily fines of £100,000 if theFrench Government fail to lift their illegal ban on British Beef.

Colin Breed MP the Liberal Democrat Agriculture and Rural Affairs Spokesmansaid today:

"Whilst I welcome this news it should not be necessary to endure thisillegal action any further.

I hope the French Food Standards Agency recognise that British Beef is noless safe than French Beef- where cases of BSE are rising whilst UK casesare declining.

I call upon the French to end this ban now"
