CURRIE & BALERNO NEWS 344
28 February 2009
Many of you wrote to me at the end of last year about the local post offices.
I am delighted the Government awarded the new contract for the Post Office Card Account to the Post Office. This is good news for Currie and Balerno Post Offices as the card account is an important source of income and brings customers through the doors of post offices across the country. This decision will help to protect the Post Offices that play such an important role in our community. The National Federation of Sub Post Masters said that without the Card Account, 3,000 Post Offices would close across the country.
This decision is particularly reassuring to people who feel they need the Post Office Card Account even more during the period of financial uncertainty that began with the collapse of banks in America. The Post office is a trusted brand and is seen as a safe, secure and reliable provider of services in these turbulent times.
I know the international financial crisis is having an impact on individuals, families and businesses in Edinburgh just as it is in other places across the world. We are experiencing exceptional times and that requires exceptional measures. But we shouldn’t repeat the mistakes of the past when people were left to cope on their own.
Many of you have written to me a wide range of other matters and I am always pleased to hear from you.
