Chancellor Must Address ‘Worrying’ Unemployment Trend - Cable
Commenting on unemployment figures from the ONS released today, which show that both the claimant count and the ILO unemployment rate have risen, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP said:
“Unemployment is at its highest level since 2003, yet we have heard nothing from the Chancellor on the issue.
“With higher council tax bills and energy bills already hitting household budgets, this trend of rising unemployment is yet another unwelcome worry. In the months to come more households may feel the pinch with personal debt and mortgage repayments put under greater pressure.
“There are also worrying signs for the wider economy with unemployment now up 120,000 over the year and vacancies falling by 43,000. All the indications are that a loosening of the labour market is set to continue.”
