‘Build Global Partnerships’, MP Urges Local Schools
Huw Irranca-Davies MP has written to the Headteachers of all schools in his Ogmore constituency to encourage them to develop educational links with schools in the developing world.
The British Council’s Global Schools Partnership enables schools in the UK to establish partnerships with schools in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America.
In addition to learning about life in the partner school’s country, students are able to take part in combined projects and exchanges with the aim of raising young people’s awareness of global development issues and to equipping them with the skills and knowledge to become active global citizens.
In 2005 Huw travelled to Uganda on a parliamentary delegation where he saw the impact that education was having upon development in that country.
In June last year Huw was also invited by Brynmenyn Primary School to talk about international development and was impressed by a project the students had undertaken on global poverty. He showed their work to the Prime Minister, who later wrote to the school to congratulate the staff and pupils.
Huw Irranca-Davies MP said:
“When I heard about the Global Schools Partnership I was sure that children at Brynmenyn and in other local schools would be really interested in linking up with a school in the developing world.
“This is a really fun and interesting way for young people in Ogmore to learn about life in other countries and to make friends all over the world.
“I hope that local schools do get involved”.
